Archery Competition

Days of Knights – A Medieval Experience

The components of the Days of Knights archery competition are – for the most part – adaptations of medieval style archery contests.  Changes from medieval practice have been made to take best advantage of our facilities, available time and space, and the likely talents and experience levels of our competitors.  We have filled in some unrecorded gaps in details of how some contests were conducted, and we have placed our own interpretations onto the historical record. On the whole, we think that this competition will capture the spirit of its medieval antecedents while stressing the skills valued among medieval archers.  Prizes will be useful yet desirable items of reproduction archery gear.

There will be five archery competitions:

            Men’s Longbow
            Women’s Longbow
            Children’s (12 and under) Longbow
            Crossbow
            Henry “Hotspur” Percy Memorial

Prizes will be awarded for first and second place in all of these except the Hotspur competition.

 General rules:

Competitors must be in medieval costume.

Only conventional, medieval style, wooden longbows may be used.  No composite bows, compound bows, or re-curved bows.  Judges may determine appropriateness of bows on site.

Bows may be of any pull weight.  However, we reserve the right to group bows by pull weight for the shoot to Range – depending upon the number and pull weight of the bows that appear at the competition.

Arrows used by adults may use most heads and feathers commonly in use between 1000 and 1600AD.  However, crescent heads may not be used in the Wand or Hunt competitions due to the damage they could do to the targets.  Competitors in the children’s class should use field points only (to minimize damage or injury if a shot goes astray).

Arrows must have wooden shafts and feathers in typical medieval style.  No modern target or hunting arrows.

Competitors are strongly advised to sign or otherwise mark their arrows for identification and recovery.

Competitors must take part in every component of the competition in which they are participating.

Crossbows must be of medieval style.

Competitors are requested to participate in the Agincourt Arrow Storm mass loosing of arrows at the conclusion of the competition.  (We plan to place a small – very cheap – video camera in the target area.)

Following are the components of the LONGBOW COMPETITIONS OR MEN AND WOMEN:

Garland (shooting in the butts against a 12” diameter circlet of vines).

Short range (distance to be determined) – 6 shots – 1 point for each arrow within garland.

Long range (distance to be determined) – 6 shots – 1 point for each arrow within the garland.

Wand (shooting in the butts against a wooden stake 5 feet tall and 3 inches wide).

Short range (distance to be determined) – 6 shots – 1 point for each arrow striking the wand.

Long range (distance to be determined) – 6 shots – 1 point for each arrow striking the wand.  1 additional point for each arrow that remains stuck in the wand.

The Hunt (walking down a wooded trail, along which numerous targets – simulated animals and hostile people – will appear).

Ranges and circumstances will vary from target to target – 1 shot permitted at each target – 1 point awarded for each target hit.

The Circle (shooting at long range into a marked circle on the ground).

6 shots – 2 points for each arrow that lands in the circle.

To Range (shooting to maximum possible distance – no target).

1 shot – 3 points to the longest shot made.

Speed (shooting arrows as fast as possible – arrows must strike in a generously proportioned target area).

½ point for every arrow shot in one minute.

THE CHILDREN’S LONGBOW COMPETITION will be same, but the long range components of the Garland and Wand will not be used, and the distance to the Circle will be reduced.

THE CROSSBOW COMPETITION will be the same except that the Circle, To Range, and Speed components will not be shot.  There will be an additional component:

The Bird (shooting at a bird-shaped wooden target atop a post).

3 shots – 2 points for each arrow that breaks or remains stuck in a bird target.

THE HENRY “HOTSPUR” PERCY MEMORIAL COMPETITION will present an award to any archer who can place an arrow or bolt into a bascinet helmet at a range yet to be determined (but very long).  Will the visor be open or closed?  We haven’t decided yet….
